The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has recently announced that 2012 was the hottest year on record for the United States. The yearly temperature averaging at 55.3°F is a whopping 3.3°F increase from the 20th century average.

The time of speculation about the credibility of climate change is over. The predictions of what natural disasters might occur come a warmer planet are no longer predictions. They are happening now.

We must care about climate change for its effects are disastrous and exponential. If we do not deal with it, we will be dealing with poverty, displacement, hunger, disease, and collapse of infrastructure. We have passed the point of not caring. We must care, and we must act.

And while individual actions to lower carbon footprints are great, at this point they are not enough. The only real hope we have to offset climate change is for government intervention. We need policies passed. We need to stop the oil drilling and stop the fracking, we need to rebuild our future on renewable energy.

Which is why, I have decided to take advantage of my 2013 Appalachian Trail thru-hike and turn it into a fundraiser for the Better Future Project.

The Better Future Project is an organization that is "focused on accelerating the growth of the environmental movement to build a better future, free from the harms of burning fossil fuels and full of stronger and more resilient communities." They are partnered with 350Mass which helps organize events and campaigns for 350.org, the leading environmental grassroots organization who is building a movement to solve the climate crisis.

These organizations are essential in solving the climate crisis for they are pressuring the government to take action.

So I ask you, friend, please donate to Better Future Project in honor of Mary's AT Thru-Hike for a Better Future. Thank you.
